About the speaker:
Dennis Schilling, sinologist and scholar in the field of Chinese philosophy, has worked and published on various topics with a focus on the Book of Changes, the Zhuāng zǐ and the modern reception and interpretation of Buddhist philosophy. In his dissertation, he comprehensively examines the emergence and development of “imitations of the ‘Changes’” (擬易) from the Hàn dynasty to the Míng dynasty, a literary genre and tradition in Chinese canonical scholarship that includes several cosmological models such as Yáng Xióng's Tài xuán jīng(揚雄太玄經) and practical divination manuals such as theYì lín(易林). His habilitation thesis deals with the revival of the idealism of Yogācāra Buddhism (wéi shì xué, 唯識學) in the revolutionary political thought of Tán Sìtóng (譚嗣同), Zhāng Tàiyán (章太炎) and other thinkers at the turn of the twentieth century. In 2009, he published a new and annotated translation of the Book of Changes(Yì jīng, 易經) in German. His current research focuses on the ideas of life and death in ancient and medieval China as well as the metaphysics of time, change and number in Chinese philosophy.
Abstract:
This lecture attempts to show that Chinese philosophy, both as a philosophical discipline and as a tradition of knowledge, is essentially determined by hermeneutic approaches and methods. Furthermore, in its long history as well as in the present, Chinese philosophy has developed various hermeneutic methods and approaches to the meaningfulness of human existence and action. Looking at Chinese philosophy in its hermeneutic structure, this can be seen in two ways: on the one hand as limiting research and investigation to the one basic concern of finding meaning and forming judgments about human action, and on the other hand as an opportunity for exploring ways of understanding human experience.
