About the speaker
Wang Xiaowei is a philosophy professor at Renmin University of China's School of Philosophy. He also serves as an executive director of the China Society for Dialectics of Nature, director of its Youth Working Committee, and secretary-general of the Beijing Society for Dialectics of Nature. He has long been engaged in the research of philosophy of technology and ethics of science and technology.
Abstract
As tech advances, technological ethics has moved from academia to public focus, demanding deeper inquiry into technology’s nature, its ties to humanity, and its values—beyond surface-level or isolated analyses.
A key shift is unfolding: moving past Western-centric views. Diverse cultural traditions, each offering unique insights into humanity and morality, are enriching the field, making it more equipped to tackle our tech-driven world’s complexities.
Exploring this through Confucianism—with its focus on harmony, relationships, and virtue—offers fresh perspective. Its emphasis on duty, community, and balance can help shape how technology serves human and societal flourishing.
This lecture explores these intersections, seeing Confucian principles as both a complement and challenge to existing approaches, fostering a more global understanding of tech ethics.
